The Autumn Moon on the Calm Lake. This is a representative piece by the master of Guangdong music Lu Wencheng, which he composed to express his admiration of the beautiful scenery of the West Lake, which he saw on an autumn visit to Hangzhou. The tune combines elements of Zhejiang folk music with the Guangdong style. It has one of the most outstanding melodies in Chinese instrumental music.”

About Lu Wencheng:

“Lü Wencheng (1898-1981) (吕文成, pinyin: Lǚ Wénchéng, or Lui Man Sing in Cantonese) was a Chinese composer and musician. He is considered to have been a master of Cantonese music and Guangdong folk music. The gaohu was developed by him in the 1920s from the erhu by raising its pitch and using steel strings instead of silk, and changing its playing position from on the thigh to between the knees. He composed ‘Autumn Moon on a Quiet Lake’ in the 1930s and it remains one of the best known works of Guangdong music.”
